Jonny Swift: "The End is Now" - A dark departure

Written bySeahouse Records Website Admin

The fifth album by Jonny Swift sees the Cumbrian-based musician take a radical move away from upbeat jangly indie pop, and sees him delve in to his darker side – which is the theme running all of the way through this album, from the artwork to the song titles themselves.

Opening up with a huge slice of Motorik Kraut-Rock with ‘Grabrauber’ (German for ‘Grave Robber’), the album then provides some Smiths style indie with ‘Dr.’ before slowing down for the Mogwai-esque ‘BATTERY ACID’.

Spooky Day’ – a poem Jonny wrote when he was eight years set to Doors style psychedelia precedes ‘Cold’ – a folk oddity written about the all year round weather conditions we all have to suffer in the UK.

The second half of the album starts with ‘I Took It Too Far Last Night’ – a song about being hungover! ‘Skeletons’ is another spoken word track, this time with guest female vocals, before short piano ballad ‘boy/girl (move away)’ takes the listener into Morrissey-Viva Hate style territory.

Penultimate track ‘Camelot’, produced by Portsmouth-based Black Hulled Ships, provides beats and electronica to lyrics about the darker side of a fairground park – before the self-titled album closer ‘The End Is Now’

The End Is Now was recorded, mixed and mastered at Digital Man Recording Studio, Barrow-In-Furness, Cumbria by Matt Kassell.
