Prater Monks are back!
Everyone’s favourite Ascetic Aesthetes, Prater Monks, return from a two year retreat with a new sound, new songs and a new live band.
New Single “Calm TheRiver” signals a change in direction for the band with the atmospherics evident in their live set captured and used as a bedrock to support the melancholic euphoria of their current release.
Recorded in SLAP studios “Calm The River” skilfully mixes acoustic guitars, keyboards and live percussion to create an intimate, emotional paean to perseverance.
Available worldwide from 11th October 2025 the band are super excited about the more sophisticated sound evident in this new recording.
Frontman and main Monk Mark says “The song is about facing down adversity, acknowledging that life will throw up challenges but knowing that by trusting in yourself and keeping control you can “Calm the River” and overcome”
Clocking in at under 3.20 long the song ends with an uncharacteristic guitar solo that captures the celebratory mood of the song perfectly.
The song was recorded and mixed over two long days with Prater Monks spending a lot of time removing as much as adding to keep the feeling alive in the song. A choir was considered and abandoned and somewhere on the studio floor lies a discarded loop of glockenspiel neither making it into the final mix.
Prater Monks still proudly claim to be the leading exponents of the Walney "Wail of Sound" but invite you to dive a little deeper beneath the (sound) waves.
Making Their Mark
2022 was a breakthrough year for Prater Monks as they took their distinctive sound to venues across the North West. Fresh from supporting indie legends The Nightingales, the band hasn't slowed down – they're currently pouring their creative energy into writing, rehearsing, and recording new material.
What's Coming in 2025/26
We're excited to announce that Prater Monks will be releasing new material including more singles before a keenly anticipated second album - in production for 2 years - finally sees the light of day.
The new songs represent a step forward in song writing and are much tighter thematically and musically with any excess fat trimmed to support their revamped musical vision.
